Fiber Optic Modems

Fiber optic modems are used in fiber optic networks for sending and receiving data. Fiber optic modems include devices with only a few ports to large multiplexers that can handle large communication networks.

Fiber optic cable connects much of the world, including undersea transatlantic cables. Fiber optic modems allow people to connect to networks worldwide with high reliability and quality of data passed back and forth. Fiber optic modems come in single mode or multi-mode versions and operate at many different wavelengths. Nanometers (nm) are the standard unit of measure. For example, high power fiber optic modems typically operate at wavelengths of 1310 nm or 1550 nm. In addition to wavelength, fiber optic modems are differentiated by whether they are considered long haul or short haul modems and whether they handle data synchronously or asynchronously. A short haul modem such as an RS232 fiber optic modem is used typically for low cost, data communication networking. By contrast, an RS530 fiber optic modem is used for high speed connections and can operate in either synchronous or asynchronous mode, meaning that it can transmit both types of data. A fiber optic T1 modem is used with a high-speed Internet connection and can also be hooked into other devices such as multiplexers or PBX boxes. B15 fiber modem optic devices are also available.

Fiber optic modems are used in a variety of settings and include devices for connecting to DSL, cable, and other commercial networks. A home network modem typically comes with two types of interface connections, universal serial bus (USB) or Ethernet. Typically, a broadband modem is connected to the Internet using the Ethernet connection because it is more reliable and does not require the installation of an additional driver to interface with the computer. Certifications and approvals for fiber optic modems include the CE Mark.
